Jack Dempsey Cichlid

Named after a famous 1920's boxer due ot their aggressive nature and strong facial features, the Jack Dempsey is a popular Central American cichlid. The Jack Dempsey cichlid is native to Mexico and Honduras where it is found in slow-moving waters with warm, murky water and sand-bottomed canals. Locally known as the Mexican Blue Frontosa.

Like most cichlids, it is considered aggressive but can get along in a well-populated tank, tending to be more territorial if able to establish a territory to defend when kept with only a few other fish. They can get more aggressive as they grow - be sure ot house with similarly-sized fish, or transfer to a species-only tank with Jack Dempsey's of a similar size. It is recommended that Jack Demspeys are provided with plenty of hiding spaces such as driftwood and caves, as they can often be shy.

The Jack Dempsey cichlid is sensitive to bright light, and will be more active during half-light. Take care when housing with plants, Jack Dempseys have been known to vandalise greenery.
